In 2022, Qatar will host the World Cup – a hot country with a political climate particularly inhospitable to gay people. Homosexuality is illegal in Qatar and being convicted of the heinous crime brings a prison sentence of up to seven years. As Sharia law has the same force as the civil penal code in Qatar, gay Muslims are subject to even a grislier fate. Homosexuality is a “crime”, deserving of death if the “offender” is married, and flogging if they are not.
